Comparing Collapsible Camping Sink Options
I am currently contemplating upgrading my camp kitchen from the Sportsman’s Warehouse modded out one to either a chuck box or something similar.
The first place I am starting is by finding collapsible sinks.
#1. Dish Tub, Yummy Sam Foldable Food Strainers Collapsible Dish Tub DishPan Colander Over the Sink Dish Drainer Strainer, Fruits Drainer Basket Vegetable Sink Colander Draining Basket. $20.99 on Amazon
Update 10/1/17
After using the collapsible sink for 7 days when back country camping I now understand the pros and cons.
Pros
- I really enjoyed the square ample space for larger plates, pans, and mugs.
- it has a straight edge which made for easy attachment of my sink faucet.
- it fit perfectly into the storage space I had allotted for it
- I like the harder plastic which feels sturdier than the plastic bag type camp sinks
Cons
- I didn’t actually ever end up using the drain spout like I have with my older kitchen set up. So the food would get stuck in the removable plug/drain.
- I ran it through the dishwasher once and it warped the bottom.
- The water does not naturally flow to empty out of the center drain. So this forced me to have to dump it out of the tub vs draining it through the bottom.
- It is slightly high maintenance to keep clean
I bought it because of its versatility of being able to be used camping and in the house while having a low profile collapsible manageable foot print in my small kitchen and precious cargo space when camping.
I also like that the drain is in the middle and that the draining port seems to have enough lip on it so that I can fashion a drain pipe to it and drain it into my gray water bin.
I had a chance to finally test out this pop up sink when campin in Southern Utah.
Update 9/12/17
Pros
- I like the collapsible component
- it easily fit my large cast iron frying pan and all camping mugs and dishes.
Cons
- It was difficult to clean because the water wouldn’t naturally drain to the center drain and I ended up having to dump it and scrub it clean.
- The drain doesn’t catch as much of food as I had hoped so I will need to add a strainer.
#2 The Companion Pop Up Dish tub & Tray Portable Sink
This item is listed for $31.62 at Fishing tackle shop Click Here!
So i really like the concept of this sink for the reasons listed above except the drain is off to one side and doesn’t seem to have a good reveal of a drain. I see this as a potential problem when trying to add a drain pipe to it.
Another issue would be all those little crevices where food would inevitably become stuck and require more water to clean!
#3 Prepworks by Progressive Collapsible Dish Tub (You may recognize this from my other posts). $12.99 on Amazon, I already own this one!
I bought this tub with the intention of using it as an entry level gateway item to see if I liked using them before jumping into making or buying a new chuck box/camp kitchen. So far I really like having it around the house and am looking forward to taking this and the #1 tub up top camping next week and testing them out.
