Wood & Bamboo Food Grade Conditioner
This conditioner is great to use on bamboo or wooden kitchen utensils, cutting boards, and butcher blocks. I made this for less than $6.00 for 20oz.
To rehydrate dry wooden utensils and cutting boards be sure and season/coat with 3-5 coats of mineral oil before using the wood conditioner for the first time. Leave the mineral oil on for at least 1 hour between coats and before wiping any excess off. Allow to sit overnight for final drying. Next apply the wood conditioner for added layer of stain and water repellency.
Using the food grade mineral oil allows this conditioner to be an indefinite shelf stable product that doesn’t expire or go rancid like cooking oils.
15oz
- Pint jar (16oz) with lid
- 3oz Filtered Beeswax
- 12oz Food Grade Mineral Oil
10 oz
- Upycle Bonne Maman 13oz jar & lid
- 2oz filtered beeswax
- 8oz food grade mineral oil
Double boiler – place a pressure cooker rack into the sauce pot before filling with water. fill sauce pot with enough water to come up to at least the halfway point of the pint jar.
Wooden chop stick, handle of wooden spoon, or a skewer can be used for stirring
Cut beeswax into small chunks and add them to the pint jar. Next place jar in water. Now set the stove to medium high temperature. Heating the glass gradually is essential to prevent it from breaking.
Allow the wax to melt, roughly 10 minutes. Once wax begins melting gently stir it continuously to help it melt.
Once the wax has completely melted add 12oz mineral oil. After adding the mineral oil the wax will re solidify so Continue to stir the mixture until a translucent golden amber color appears.
Remove the pot from heat and allow the jar 5 minutes to cool and then remove jar and place onto a towel on the counter. Again we are avoiding drastic temperature changes that can cause the glass to shatter.
DONE!
Now just allow the jar to sit and cool and the conditioner will begin to solidify!
