DIY Drape Baton
here is a an easy fix to a custom issue.
Supplies
- wooden dowel
- sand paper
- Foam brush applicator
D-ring (True Value, Ace Hardware)Silver lanyard metal clips (Joann’s, micheals, HobbyLobby)- wood stain
- Polyurethane for wood
- pliers
- needle nose pliers
- Leather string
For a 5/8” dowel I used a 1” D-Ring which I sourced from True Value and Ace hardware. The Gold lanyards I bought online.
I have learned a better method for drape dowels.

#1. Drill Wooden Dowel no more than 1/2 in from the end of the dowel, larger than the size of the leather string.
#2. Sand off the drill hole wood spurs
#3. Apply stain, let dry, repeat
#4. Apply polyurethane, let dry, repeat
#5. Add leather string and attach to drapes.
I have heavy weight warm window drapes on DIY EMT conduit rods so I added nylon webbing to my drape header for reinforced strength when opening and closing the curtains. Using D ring and standard drapery hardware caused the destruction of the EMT Conduit paint and completely destroyed the original header tape I first attached.
